The Municipality of Figalia

figaleia-iliafigaleia-roadmapThis municipality includes the administrative divisions of Nea Figaleia, which is the centre of the municipality, Faskomylia Kryoneri, Perivoli, Petralona, Stomio, Figaleia (Pavlitsa) on a surface of 12,000 acres. It is mountainous offering to the visitors the opportunity to explore the beautiful natural surroundings.

Nea Figaleia is built amphitheatrically on hills clad in olive trees and cypresses having a magnificent view towards the Ionian Sea.
It is worth one's while visiting the Byzantine Church of The Assumption, the Folklore Museum, and the natural springs walking down the tiled walkways. The St Nicholas Church is a good example of the 19th century church building.

The area was wellknown as Zourtsa undertaking a significant role during the Independence War of 1821. It was mentioned by the Turkish traveler Elviya Tselebi who visited the area between 1668 and 1761. He described it as a famous resort, full of springs, vineyards, gardens and 150 stone-built houses.

Departing from Stomio, you can trek in the Neda's area. Apart from nature, you can admire the beautiful stone houses in Perivolia and Petralona. You can also see the Byzantine Church in Kryoneri, the Strogo mill, the stone bridges in Petralona and, finally, the findings in ancient Krene.

The city of Figaleia is found near to current Paylitsa, as well as the Neda River.
It is the Capital city of Figaleia Municipality, built amphitheatrically in verdant soil full with olives in 420m altitude giving beautiful view towards the Ionian sea. It is placed 55 km far from the Pyrgos city having 184 residents.

It is a traditional village with stone-built houses. During the past few years, the local residents used to renovate their houses maintaining however their traditional character. In the region exist springs of water which, in the past, were being exploited by several watermills.

Petralona

 

It is a traditional village built on the side hill in 660 meters altitude with beautiful stone-built houses and watersprings. The rhythm of life here is quite and relaxing.

Being placed 13km far from the New Figaleia, its population arises up to 332 registered residents.

It is a traditional settlement where there are several srings of water as a lot of taps and wells. Southernly of the village was placed in the narrowest point of the gorge, according to the legend, the Oil Hill of Figaleia next to the cavern of Godess Dimitra Melaini.

It placed 20km far from the New Figaleia having 62 residents.

The Municipal Administrative Division of Pavlitsa

It is placed 23,5km south-easternly of the New Figaleia. In 2001 exited 98 residents. According to the legend, Figaleia took its name from the homonym nymph of the forests.
In 659 B.C. the Spartians took over the area, while later it was subjugated to the Aitolians and, successively, to the Macedonians.

Figaleia is surrounded by the Kotilion and the Oil mountains. Kotilion is placed forty units of "stadio" (old distance measure unit) from the city, where exists the Vassai place and the Temple of Epikoureio Apollo.

The name Epikoureios was given to Apollo, because came helping in an epidemic disease during the war between Athenians and Peloponnesians saving Figaleians.

The Architect of the Temple was the Iktinos, who built the Parthenon for Athenians. The statue of Epikoureio Apollo has been transfered in Megalopolis.

Nowdays, the temple constitutes one from the bigger masterpieces of classic art and thousands of foreigners visit the site in order to admire the excellent work of the Artist.
